Lohan Qigong 2 Book is a conitnuation of Lohan Qigong 1. Lohan is the Chinese word for Arthat, an Indian term that refers to one of the sixteen disciples of the Buddha. It is often translated as the ‘enlightened one’. Lohan, 18 Arhats, 18 Lohan Shou, 18 Hand Movements of the Enlightened One – all refer to the same type of exercise based on the legendary exercises developed by Bodhidarama (Ta Mo), an Indian monk who came to Shaolin temple in the Hu Nan privince in the 6th Century and established a school of Zen Buddhism.

This is a great exercise that can be learnt with the Australian Academy of Tai Chi. It can be instantly relaxing, bringing one a sense of calm and peace. It has the potential to strengthen the physical body gently but deeply. It balances left and right hemispheres of the brain, enabling one to be ultimately focused in the present. The Lohan is a particularly beneficial form of Qigong in that it is intended to be performed with ‘drama’. This is particularly good for raising and invigorating one’s sense of vitality, dispelling depression and lethargy.

The movements follow traditional martial arts principles. They involve full extension of the limbs in stretching movements and emphasise the development and use of the Shen (emotion/spirit) through use of mental imagery.

If there are blockages or other illnesses within the body, the movements can help to soothe the internal organs. By doing this the body will begin to relax and feel more at ease. Lohan Qigong 2 Book has exercises that compliments Tai Chi as an exercise set. It is recommended to complete the full set of exercises when practising from start to finish. This will ultimately give the most benefit for the individual feeling refreshed, relaxed and calm.

Lohan movements should be slow, smooth and interconnected. In all of the movements, you should be trying to express power and energy. This is done mentally rather than physically. This helps to move Qi and Blood in the body, whereas tight muscles can stagnate Qi. The basic stance to use in Lohan is feet shoulder width and a half apart, in a horse stance. As the body warms up, you will be able to cope and adapt into wider stances. A wider stance allows you to sink lower compared to a shortened stance. The uprightness helps to protect the spine and neck. This may help to reduce or avoid back pain, headaches, muscle cramping and overuse of a particular area. Proper posture encourages Qi and Blood to flow freely. Do not over exert on any particular movement as it may cause discomfort and injury.
