Shibashi X Book is a detailed instructional binder with pictures. Shibashi (十八式) literally means ’18 movements’ or techniques. The Shibashi exercises are modified by Grandmaster Gary Khor into a health plan, designed to cultivate relaxation and energy, and a gentle physical and mental workout for the whole human body. The use of 18 exercises in a sequence dates back to 500 CE when Bodhidarma created the Lohan or 18 Arhat form of exercise. The mortdern form of Shibashi exercises was developed in the 1950s and most are based on a form developed by Dr Chan (a Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner). Dr Chan’s aim was to teach a simple, repetitive (and therefore easy to learn) set of exercises for his patients to use as a means of enhancing their health and longevity.
Shibashi X was designed by Grandmaster Gary Khor to supplement other Shibashi forms taught by the Australian Academy of Tai Chi. Shibashi X differs from Shibashi 1 and 2 in the AATC by drawing more widely on Wushu and martial arts forms than existing Shibashi forms. This means that those who have enjoyed and benefited from other Shibashi forms can now increase the variety of the movements they perform. This not only increases interest but also exposes practitioners to more benefits.
Like other Shibashi forms, Shibashi X can be practised as a form in its own right or provide an introduction to other Chinese health arts and martial arts. Shibashi X is based on movements that include techniques extracted from:
– Yang Style Tai Chi
– Chen Style Tai Chi
– Wu Shu
– Preying Mantis (martial art)
– Bodhidarma’s Sinew Stretching Exercises
– Lohan Qigong
– Mind Power Qigong
– Tao Yin
